Moving to Northern Virginia

Day trips worth the drive.

One of the best parts of living here is how easy it is to leave. Wine country, mountain towns, and Civil War history are all within a couple hours. Here is where I actually go, sorted by the kind of day you want.

Wine Country

Loudoun and Fauquier are DC's backyard vineyards

Middleburg

Loudoun County

Horse country charm, boutiques, and a dozen serious wineries within minutes. The prettiest first-timer intro to Virginia wine.

Big, polished, and family-friendly with sweeping views. Bring people who are new to wineries, they will get it here.

Visit site →

Norton specialists on a working farm with a creamery. A little more rustic, a lot more character.

Visit site →

The closest real winery to Arlington, and dogs are welcome on the lawn. My easy Sunday reset.

Historic Towns

Cobblestones, battlefields, and colonial streets

Harpers Ferry

Jefferson County, WV

Where three states and two rivers meet. Cliffside history, hiking, and rafting all in one town. I know it well, I rebuilt an 1892 Victorian nearby.

Charles Town

Jefferson County, WV

Quieter than Harpers Ferry, with a walkable historic core, casino, and racetrack. An easy add-on to a Harpers Ferry day.

Visit site →

Charming downtown, antique shops, and dense Civil War history an hour south. Great half-day when you want a walkable town.

Visit site →

Living-history theme park meets real colonial town. It is a longer haul, so make it an overnight and add Busch Gardens.

Visit site →

Outdoors & Scenic

Mountains, overlooks, and open air

105 miles of overlooks, waterfalls, and trails for every level. Go in October for leaf season, but go early to beat the crowds.

Visit site →

Caverns, farm stands, and small towns like Front Royal and Luray. A slower, scenic counterpoint to the park itself.

Visit site →

The Potomac roars through the rocks here and you are barely 30 minutes out. The easiest big-nature hit near the city.

Visit site →

Skyline Drive at Sunset

Front Royal entrance

If you only have an evening, drive up to the northern entrance for golden hour. Pack a picnic and a blanket.

Visit site →

Waterfront & Charm

When you want the water and a walkable main street

Occoquan

Prince William County

Tiny riverfront arts town with antique shops and a great craft fair. An under-the-radar half day, 40 minutes south.

Visit site →

National Harbor

Just across the river, MD

The giant Ferris wheel, waterfront dining, and the MGM. Touristy but genuinely fun with a group or visiting family.

Visit site →

Solomons Island

Southern Maryland

Sleepy Chesapeake boardwalk town with crab shacks and sunsets over the water. Worth the drive when you want the bay.
